Silver Linings Playbook

The film I chose is Silver Linings Playbook written and directed by David O. Russell.  The three actors I chose from this film is Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro.

Jennifer Lawrence is considered a wild card.  “A wild card, is an actor who is difficult to classify as one certain type, often because he or she can play a wide variety of characters equally well without becoming typecast.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014)  In this film Jennifer Lawrence plays Tiffany a young widow, she plays this role with her heart.  She is a very emotional independent widow that does not put up with anybody’s crap, she is always willing to challenge someone.  She comes into contact with Patrick who is very negative, he is set on winning his ex-wife back she agrees to help him.  As their relationship evolves they begin to like each other more as time goes on.  She teaches him through dancing he can love someone else.

Bradley Cooper plays Patrick a former teacher and divorcee.  I would classify him as a character “actors who are able to fit invisibly into a wide variety of disparate characters adapting to the needs of each script and director they work with.” (GoodyKoontz & Jacobs, 2014)  In this film he plays a very negative person who is diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder.  He has it in his mind that he is going to get back with his ex-wife.  Tiffany comes into his life and tries to help him out through dancing.  He plays hard to get at first by saying hurtful things to Tiffany, as time goes on he realizes Tiffany is the one for him.  She helps him experience the positive things in life.

Robert De Niro plays Patrick father.  I would classify him as an interpreter, “actors who take the material of often well-known roles and put their own stamp on it.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014)  In this film he loses his job and his plan is to gamble to make the money to open a restaurant.  He is very passionate about football and as you watch this is what he bets all his money on.  He plays a very passionate character in this film.

Jennifer Lawrence has played in many well know films such as the Hunger Games, American Hustle, and X-men all these films she played a completely different character.  This is what makes her a wild card, she is able to play many different roles and do them good.  When you hear her name you don’t just think of one kind of film role that she fits into, because she has played many.  I think this says a lot about her she is a very diverse person that enjoys playing different roles not just being known for one specific type.  A good example is in this film Silver Linings Playbook, she plays as an older women, but when she took this role she was just 21 you would never think that she was that young with the role of Tiffany.

Sound is important in any film.  There are three basic categories film sound come from they are dialogue, sound effects, and music.  Dialogue is known as “characters talking to one another in film.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs 2014)  Sound effects are the background noises that make the movie come to life by “intensifying the action or enhance the sense of environment.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014)  The music is used to set the mood for the audience. All these three work together to enhance the film.

In the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs the overall theme is good versus evil.  The sound matches each scene perfect within this film.  “Music, as it has since the Silent Era, pulls viewers into the mood of scenes.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014) When this film shows the Evil Queen, it uses background music that is harsh and intense, to put you into the mood that something bad is going to happen.  When you see Snow White there is more of an up beat music that is played, to give you the mood of happiness.    In this scene the evil witch finds Snow White, as the witch approaches the window the background music is loud and eerie, this gives you a sense that something bad is about to happen.  Throughout this scene regular dialogue is used between the evil witch and Snow White.  As Snow White bites into apple she falls to the ground. The sound effects of rain and thunder are immediately used in this scene.  This give the audience a frightening feeling of what just happened.  As you can see all of the three basic categories of sound are used and you can see how they all work together in this scene.  If the director would have used different sound for this scene it would not be the same.  For instance, if they used a happy up-beat music as the evil witch approached the window you would not think anything bad was going to happen.  There was an exaggerated use of the thunder, but this was used to get the attention and to intensify the evil of what just happened to Snow White.  I think that all the sound works perfect in this film.

Lighting Techniques

In the movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs there are two lighting techniques used, they are low and high-key lighting.  In the beginning of this movie the Wicked Queen steps up to her Magic Mirror, here they are using low-key lighting.  “Low-key lighting is used for intense dramatic scenes.”(Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2014)  This particular scene lighting is very dark the only lighting is used to focus is on the Wicked Queen as she speaks to her Magic Mirror.  Through out the movie whenever the Wicked Queen is shown the  low-key lighting is used.  Another time low-key lighting is used when Snow White is frightened running into the forest.  This movie uses the low-key lighting technique to give the audience an intense frightening feeling.

Another lighting technique this movie used is high-key lighting.  “This lighting style is typical of happy scenes.” (Goodykoontz & Jacobs 2014)   As Snow White awakes in the forest, the high-key lighting is used.  They want the audience to feel as if it is daylight.  This scene is representing Snow White how happy she is to be around the animals and how they make her feel as if she is welcomed.  The animals lead her to a small cottage, where the high-key lighting is used while she cleans up the cottage.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is considered animated musical genre.   I think that the two lighting techniques used fit the movie perfect.  The low-key lighting was used when there was an intense or danger scene, almost to show who are the evil characters in this movie.  The high-key lighting was used to show the happy and musical scenes.

If there were different choices made for the lighting I don’t think it would have turned out to be such a great classic.  For example, if they used high-key lighting through out the movie, you would not get a feeling that the Queen was evil.  It would have made the movie boring and lifeless.  That goes vise versa if they would have used low-key lighting through out the movie it would not give you a happy feeling, it would almost make it dark and morbid.  In the end you would not have ended up with such a great movie.

In the movie Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs there is a young lady named Snow White who lives with her stepmother known as the Wicked Queen.  Every day the Wicked Queen asks her Magic Mirror “Who is the fairest one of all?” it has always been the Queen, but as Snow White has grown up the mirror replies “Snow White is the fairest one of all”.   The Wicked Queen becomes enraged and calls on the huntsman and demands that he kill Snow White.  The Queen also tells him that he will bring back her heart as proof.  As the huntsman proceeds to find Snow White he comes from behind her and she turns around he holds a knife up to her as he tries to kill her he realizes he can not and demands that she go far from the kingdom and never return. Snow White is frightened and runs off into the woods, she is overwhelmed and collapses onto the ground.  The huntsman returns to the Wicked Queen with the heart of a pig, she believes it is Snow Whites.

Snow White awakes to find all the friendly animals around her they led her through the woods to a small cottage.  She enters the cottage and realizes someone is living there.  Snow White cleans up and from all the cleaning she is exhausted and proceeds upstairs to find seven tiny little beds she feels very sleepy, so she decides to lay across the beds and falls asleep.  She is suddenly awakened to find the seven dwarfs staring at her she proceeds to guess their names as she looks at them.  Snow White asks the seven dwarfs if she can stay there and she will clean in return.  They are pleased with Snow White and they let her stay.  The seven dwarfs head to work in the mine.  The Wicked Queen looks into her mirror and asks “Who is the fairest one of all?”  the magic mirror replies “Snow White is the fairest one of all”.  The Wicked Queen is furious, she finds where Snow White is and transforms herself into a wicked old lady.  She finds Snow White outside and gives her a deadly apple, Snow White bites into it and immediately falls to the ground.  The Wicked Queen is happy she proceeds back to her kingdom, but she encounters the seven dwarfs they chase her to a cliff she falls off and dies.  The seven dwarfs run home and they see Snow White laying there lifeless they all become saddened.   The dwarfs build her a glass coffin and they watch over her everyday.  A Prince comes into the woods where Snow White lays in her coffin.  He is amazed with her beauty he kneels down to kiss her and with that kiss the spell is broken and he brings her back to life.  They all live happily ever after!

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs is in chronological order, it begins with the Wicked Queen and her Magic Mirror.  As Snow White begins to become older her beauty is noticed by the Magic Mirror.  As the Queen realizes she has competition she tries to take Snow White out of the picture.

All of the scenes for Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs fall in order to tell the story from how her beauty is noticed.  It goes on to tell the story of  how she is forced out of the kingdom and all the challenges she encounters on her journey.   Having this movie told in a chronological way keeps the audience’s interest to see what is going to happen to Snow White.  If this movie was told in a non-linearly way it would not make much sense, to the audience.
